Let's face it...I awake at 4 a.m. every morning...sigh...even in summer. I WISH I could sleep in, but I can't. The minute there is the faintest morning light, my eyes are open. I had been eating a bowl of cereal with SILK, but it left me lethargic and bloated, so I quit. Then, I ate 2 slices of sourdough bread with butter and jam...er..ahh...no. That didn't work either. An hour after I ate that, I was starving again, and those of you who have horses know you need energy to deal with them...and I didn't have time to stop and eat something else (or the desire to do so). So, lately I've been just having a cup of coffee in the morning, and then before I head out to the horse ranch, I make a morning smoothie. I've discovered that Fresh & Easy carries the Jamba Juice smoothie packets, which make 2 smoothies. And, at about $3.99, that's a pretty good deal. You are supposed to add apple juice and I add the F&E organic apple juice, which costs a little bit more than their regular one, but I figure..hey..it's worth it, right? I also toss in a measuring cup of Spiru-Teun, which has spirulina in it. It also has a bunch of vitamins and only 96 calories per serving. I buy it by the small container, which is about $16 (on special). Oh, and I add carob powder and organic molasses. Yum,yum! (slurp, slurp!) Sometimes I'll alternate with VEGA complete whole food health optimizer, which I buy in individual packets at Whole Foods (when we are at a Whole Foods...we don't have one in the desert)...and it has vitamins, protein, Omega 3 & 6 essential fatty acids, a mixed berry blend, and a probiotic blend. The spiru-tein has 6 grams of sugar, while the VEGA has none...hmmm...I think I'm going to order a container of it! Anyway, that's my morning shake and I can make it in my blender. I'd been looking at buying a juicer from my cousin, but I think I'm going to pass on that...that's another blog later! Here are some pics of the ingredients for my morning smoothie. Oh, and I add 1 T of golden flax seeds and I eat 2 dates beforehand. Total cost to make: about $2.00 (I figure about $1.00 for the scoop of spiru-tein, and about $1.00 for the other ingredients).
